  • Michael Patrick 'Mickey' Dugan, 72

    Michael Patrick “Mickey” Dugan passed away peacefully at his home in Cheshire, Conn., with his wife, Mary Roth Dugan, at his side on Friday, July 3, 2009.  

    Born in Denver, on Nov. 26, 1937, Michael lived most of his life in Colorado before moving to Cheshire in 2001.

    In addition to his wife, Michael leaves behind two sons from a previous marriage, Ben and Dan and their families, and his brother Donald (Nadine).

  • Patt Hickam, 88

    Patt Hickam, 88, of Bloomington, Ind., formerly of Spencer, Ind., passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Meadowood Retirement Community.

    She was born Dec. 4, 1920, in Indianapolis to E.E. Wood and Doris Will (Schilling) Nichols. Patt attended Shortridge High School until her junior year, then transferred to Spencer High School, where she met Elliott, and graduated in 1938. She went on to Indiana University, graduating in 1942 with a business degree.

  • Phyllis Gloria Vanderwork, 88

    A memorial celebration for longtime Kiowa County resident Phyllis G. Vanderwork will be held at 10:30 a.m.  Wednesday, June 10, at the Peacock Family Chapel, with Gayle Gaither officiating. A private graveside inurnment will be held that afternoon at the Eads Cemetery.

    Phyllis was born May 26, 1921, in Lincoln, Neb., to Lyle L. and Ethel (Harvey) Gaither, and she passed away at her home in Eads with her family by her side on May 30, at the age of 88.

  • Jim Braid, 78

    Jim Braid, our beloved friend and brother, passed away May 31 at Life Care Center of Evergreen.

    He was born April 11, 1931, in Denver. He had various jobs while a resident of Idaho Springs; one of which was to help Al Mosch at one of the mines. He also performed handyman tasks for various people. But perhaps Jim is best known for his sweet spirit and friendly smile. In later years, he lived at the Senior Center.

    A celebration of his life will be held at 12:15 p.m. Monday, June 15, at Project Senior Center, 1402 Miner St. in Idaho Springs.

  • Vera Joan Hansen, 94

    A 47-year Evergreen resident, Vera Joan Hansen passed away June 8, 2009, at Life Care Center of Evergreen. She was 94.

    Survivors include sons Charles (Marianne) Selkirk of Idaho Springs and Lance (Charlotte) Selkirk of Lodi, Calif. There are two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Shardlow, passed away a few years ago.

  • Mainard D. 'Sparky' Sparks

    Mainard D. “Sparky” Sparks, 89, of Greenwood, Ark., passed away Monday, April 20, 2009, in Fort Smith, Ark.

    He was born Dec. 24, 1919, in Sutherland, Neb. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1938. He was a World War II Army veteran who served in France and Austria. He retired from Time DC Truck Line in Denver, where he worked as a body man, then became a building manager for Clear Creek Public Schools in Idaho Springs.

  • Dr. John Thomas Calhoun, 68

    John Calhoun, 68, passed away at Hospice of St. John on March 22, 2009, after a mercifully short battle with cancer.

    John was born in Phoenix, Ariz., on May 11, 1940, to Joseph and Grace Calhoun. He grew up in Denver and attended Denver Country Day School. He attended Williams College for his undergraduate degree, Wichita State University for his master’s degree and the University of Colorado for his doctorate in communications and theater.

  • Laura Lee Kubin Thurman, 89

    Memorial services for Laura Lee Kubin Thurman, 89, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the United Church in Idaho Springs. She died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at Pioneer Ridge Health Care Center in Lawrence, Kan.

  • Lois Estelle (Sutton) Allen, 87

    Lois Estelle (Sutton) Allen, 87, died Nov. 14, 2008, in Golden.

    Lois grew up in McCook, Neb., the daughter of Harold and Gladys Sutton, oldest sister to Harvey and Suzanne. She attended music school at Northwestern in Chicago, where she earned her teaching certificate and met Wayne Allen. They were married during World War II while Wayne served in the Navy as a pilot in the South Pacific. When he completed his tour of duty, they settled in McCook and later moved to Gothenburg, Neb., where they raised their three children.
