  • Short-handed Diggers content with 8th

THORNTON — The Clear Creek Golddiggers cross country team knew it was going into the Thornton Invitational short-handed and that’s why an eighth-place finish for the both the boys and girls team was more than acceptable to head coach Jeff Miller.

  • Fire chief is injured at blaze

Clear Creek Fire Chief Kelly Babeon was seriously injured and a local family is homeless after a fire destroyed a house west of Idaho Springs on Sept. 18.

No one else was injured, and Clear Creek Fire Authority firefighters contained the blaze, so it did not spread to the surrounding forest.

“We didn’t end up with a forest fire, and (there was) no wind. If it were windy, we’d have a different story going on right now,” Babeon said.

  • Clear Creek students view options after high school

The next step after high school is on the minds of students at Clear Creek High School and Middle School.

The schools are taking a multi-pronged approach to help students find their way to institutions of higher learning and careers.

It began last week with a college fair at the high school with representatives from 35 schools in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Kansas and Arizona speaking with students about career options and what the schools have to offer.

  • Widening I-70 will put scars on land

“Now his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear

Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend

Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more

More people, more scars upon the land.”

    — from “Rocky Mountain High” by John Denver

  • Three arrested near Empire after target shooting

Three men shooting at targets near Empire were arrested on Sept. 12 after a stray bullet landed near a group of people who were picnicking.

According to Clear Creek Sheriff Don Krueger, while one of the men was being arrested, the other two, still armed, fled into the trees.

As a result, the local law enforcement tactical team was called in to assist in their capture.

  • Schools need tax boost to avoid more cuts

The Clear Creek School District has a long tradition of providing excellent educational opportunities to the children of this community at a relatively low cost to taxpayers compared with neighboring school districts. It is proud of its small class sizes and excellent teachers, and resulting high educational achievement.

  • A view of the natural world from Sylvia’s window

As most of my friends know, I took a tumble in early August and broke my right wrist, so I have been confined to a nursing home ever since I got out of the hospital. That’s only because I can’t manage very well by myself with only one arm. However, it’s doing well and I’ll soon be out of a cast and then I can do a great deal more, I hope, even though it will still be stiff and sore.

  • Plugging all the leaks

The beautiful days of September are not only a great time to enjoy Colorado’s high country but also bring a reminder that summer is all too fleeting and cooler weather will be back soon.

This is an excellent time to think about what low-cost energy efficiency improvements you could make to your home that will pay dividends not only in the winter but throughout the year.

  • Bird lovers should crow about crows

When we moved here in 1965, crows were officially named the “common crow.” But, they were definitely not common in Evergreen, except in winter. Summer crows in the mountains were few and far between.

  • Survey responses direct local health efforts

Over my career, surveying constituents has always been an important part of the planning and goal-setting process: always good to know your audience, customer, stakeholder, client or resident and their needs before writing up the plan. Or to put it another way —best to know the condition of the water and wind before you launch your boat and set your sail.
