  • Candidates tout their plans for change at Dems picnic

    The Clear Creek Democrats enjoyed a perfect day and setting for their ninth annual Bands, Beer, Brats & Dems picnic and rally on July 10.

    Upwards of 250 attendees gathered at the Courtney-Riley-Cooper Parks in Idaho Springs to partake of the standard food faire of American summer celebrations, music by the Wizards of Whack, and the information imparted by Democratic dignitaries and hopefuls for U.S., state and local elections.

    Hotel de Paris Museum will celebrate Bastille Day from 4 to 6 p.m. July 14  at the Georgetown Community Center. The museum will be introducing its new director, Kevin Kuharic.

  • Hickenlooper campaign stops in Clear Creek

    When Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper was a kid, his mom taught him to be frugal and to conserve. She washed tin foil and plastic wrap and taped them to the refrigerator door so she could reuse them to save money and to recycle wisely.

    “What does it harm us to use less?” asked Hickenlooper, now a Democratic candidate for governor, when he visited Idaho Springs on June 23 to discuss renewable resources. He spoke at Beau Jo’s restaurant, known for its green approach to food service.

    The Oh My Gawd Rodeo returns. The rodeo features bulls, broncs, ropers, racers and mutton bustin’. The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. Fridays at the Kiefer Arena. Take Interstate 70 to Idaho Springs, then take the frontage road west. Adults are $10, kids ages 10 to 17 are $5, and children under 10 are free. For entry information, call 303-622-9745.

  • Number of suicides increases in county in 2010

    An increase in the number of suicides in Clear Creek County has prompted the creation of a task force that will explore ways to educate residents on suicide awareness and prevention.

    So far this year, five local residents have killed themselves, compared with five suicides in all of 2009. Of the five suicides in 2009, only two were local residents.

  • Brother-sister duo start bluegrass fest in Springs

    A local brother-and-sister team decided it wouldn’t hurt if Idaho Springs was a bit more musical, and so the pair have created a bluegrass festival.

    The Clear Creek Rapid Grass music festival, a nonprofit event, will take place on July 10 from 4 to 11 p.m. at the Idaho Springs Baseball Fields.

  • Hotel de Paris in G-town hires new director

    Georgetown’s Hotel de Paris Museum has a new director.

    Kevin Kuharic was hired last month by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, which owns the museum. Kuharic said he has big plans for the museum that could include new exhibits and hosting fund-raising events.

  • Dem hopeful for sheriff not in violation of Hatch Act

    The Democratic opponent of Clear Creek Sheriff Don Krueger has been cleared of a campaign-related complaint, and his bid for the office continues unabated.

    The U.S. Office of Special Counsel has determined that the campaign of Idaho Springs police Sgt. Jim Vogt is not in violation of the Hatch Act. Vogt received a letter from attorney Justin Martell with the investigating agency stating, “After reviewing this matter, we conclude you are not presently subject to the restrictions of the Hatch Act, and we are closing our file …”
