    Some things are worth preserving

    I read my friend Jerry’s opinion on the need to save Georgetown and Silver Plume from the recalcitrant zealots who want to preserve the National Historic Landmark District, and I was left wondering if he isn’t a secret lobbyist for some energy or mining interest.

  • Loaves and Fishes has permanent location, new president

    This year has been a big one for local nonprofit Loaves and Fishes.

    The food bank recently purchased its building at 545 Highway 103 with the help of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and took on a new board president as it celebrates 10 years of serving Clear Creek and Gilpin counties.

    A permanent location

    The nonprofit is finally in a permanent location due in large part to the efforts of former board president and current member Sally Nisler.

  • Community remains split on ski park

    Community feedback on the controversial Eclipse Snow Park was decidedly split at a public hearing May 26 before the Clear Creek County commissioners.

    The meeting drew a large crowd, filling the Georgetown Community School’s gym bleachers, as the developers presented their goals for the park planned near St. Mary’s Glacier, which they are calling a family-oriented, learn-to-ski opportunity.

  • High school raising graduation requirements

    Clear Creek High School is bolstering its graduation requirements this fall to better prepare students for life after 12th grade.

    First, over the next five years, the high school and middle school will gradually increase the base level for a passing grade to 70 percent rather than the traditional 60 percent.

  • Sweeney, Streweler ride out to early lead

    DUMONT — Sami Jo Sweeney knows her horse quite well. She ought to. She’s had the ride since she was 11. So when a thunderous downpour rained down on the Oh My Gawd Rodeo at the Gene Kiefer Memorial Fairgrounds on June 11 it wasn’t that big of a deal.

    If anything, it may have been a blessing in disguise.

    “My horse likes the rain. It’s good for us. We pray for rain when we run,” the 21-year-old Brighton resident said.

    She got her wish in buckets, and it paid off quite nicely.

  • Group aims to train residents in emergency response

    A fire starts in Clear Creek County and quickly grows out of control as the windy, dry, hot weather and the beetle kill give it fuel and deadly momentum.

    It spreads in flaming fingers over the mountains and along Interstate 70 before turning into a moving wall of flame. As with the recent fires in California, residents are evacuated and houses burn.

    This scenario, however horrific, could happen here, and the Clear Creek County Community Emergency Response Team — known as CERT — wants residents to know what to do just in case.

  • Sweet success: G-town Community Center set for chocolate fund-raiser

    From the time of the ancient Mayans and their predecessors. the Olmec, chocolate has been praised for a wealth of health-benefiting properties.

    It has been said that chocolate has, among other things, the ability to lower blood pressure and cholesterol — and it also can benefit nonprofit community centers.

    From 7 to 9:30 p.m. June 12, the Georgetown Community Center will host its seventh annual Chocolate Cocktail Party.

  • Whitewater park opens in Lawson

    Whitewater boating and kayaking are alive and well at the newest addition for those outdoor sports in Clear Creek County — the Lawson Whitewater Park.

    The park celebrated its grand opening May 22. It includes boulders that create specialty chutes and waves for kayakers and other boaters along the 450-foot stretch of Clear Creek just upstream from Mile Hi Rafting.

    The park also has improved parking and a changing station with environmentally friendly toilets.

  • Memorial Day events planned in Idaho Springs, Empire

    On May 31, American flags will be waving across the county as Clear Creek observes Memorial Day.

    From 11 a.m. to noon May 31 in Citizens Park, residents will gather to pay tribute to the soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

    Local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4121 is hosting the event. There will be guest speakers, and the Cow Boy Band will play a traditional selection of patriotic tunes.
