After years of work and collaboration, Sally Guanella Buckland finally cut a ribbon Friday to celebrate the official reopening of historic Guanella Pass Road. What was once a dirt road is now paved and has new guardrails.
The 24-mile scenic byway connects the towns of Georgetown and Grant. With stunning views of Mount Bierstadt and Mount Evans, the pass, which tops out at 11,669 feet, is a popular place for camping and hiking. It was named in 1953 after Sally’s father, Byron Guanella, a longtime county road supervisor.
