Dogs, their owners have a ruff time at annual fund-raiser

With a leash-straining lurch and a cacophony of barking, more than 100 dogs and as many runners jerked forward to begin the Canine on the Creek 5K Run on Saturday morning.

Several four-legged participants resorted to walking on hind legs in their enthusiasm to hurry along their slower owners.

For the past two years, runners and walkers have gathered at Charlie’s Place, the Clear Creek/Gilpin County Animal Shelter in Dumont, to raise funds for the shelter and share their enthusiasm for all things canine.

Dynamite Days should be a blast

The Idaho Springs Chamber of Commerce’s Dynamite Days event is a go.

The event, named because of the blasting that is occurring to widen the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70 east of the city, will be Saturday, Aug. 24.

City council member Phil Adams moved to approve the special-event permit, and several council members jumped to second it before it was unanimously approved at the May 13 meeting.

“Everyone that I’ve spoken to, they’re so excited,” said council member Marilyn Anderson.  

History in the making

Using photographs like a time machine, six students in Carlson Elementary’s gifted education program looked into the history of Clear Creek County to learn about their community.

The fourth- and fifth-graders took pictures of various locations in the county and compared them with historic photographs. They presented their findings to parents at the school on May 13.

Participating in the project were fifth-graders Emma Sanderourth, Maria Salinas and Ashley Hillman, and fourth-graders Seattle Schuessler, Elsie Gothman and Bhodi Yohn.

Huskies grab early lead to throttle Golddiggers

It’s hard to imagine Platte Canyon hitting much better. After all, the Huskies scored five runs in the first inning of their 12-4 victory over host Clear Creek on April 30. But to hear Platte Canyon head coach Bruce Hooser tell it, his team can only get better with the 3A playoffs on the horizon.

“We’re still not hitting the way I know we know how to hit, but we’re hitting better now,” Hooser said.

Spring’s arrival brings new growth to aspen, alder trees

 It is so nice to have some warm spring days, and now we are promised summer temperatures this week. Just to go out in my yard and see green fields and robins looking for worms, and hear green-tailed towhees and house wrens singing is a tonic for my winter-shriveled soul.

Winter has been far too long this year, partly because it started early and because spring is a good two weeks late. The aspen trees at the bend in the road usually have their furry catkins by April 15, but this year, they did not shed their bud scales and bring out their furry catkins until May 2.

It shouldn’t be a big deal to be gay

 NBA star Jason Collins has proclaimed to the world he is gay. What’s the big deal? Billions have publicly averred their personal truths since time immemorial. 

People declare their religious preferences — Catholic, Muslim, Mormon, Southern Baptist — daily, and oftentimes fight and kill to prove their love for their God. No big deal, eh?

Two-thirds of registered voters have declared their political party preferences, thus telling the rest of the world they are more likely liberal or conservative. No big deal, eh?

Hummingbird feeders need meticulous care

 Once more we have snow in May. This is a bit disturbing because we have just had some fine spring weather in April, and this seems like we are going backward. We don’t really want to see winter return, but it is not unusual. 

Several people reported hummingbirds during this period, and I received several requests to write an article about hummingbirds and how to feed them. Because of its importance and for the welfare of our hummingbirds, here is the information.

Cougars lack poise in playoff setback

MONUMENT — Blood, sweat and tears, Evergreen had a little bit of it all on May 10.

First, the Lady Cougars had blood courtesy of the bitten tongue of freshman scoring machine Zoe Peterson in the first half. Then there’s the sweat. They are playing soccer after all. And, finally, the tears for a season that ended at Don Breese Stadium in the second round of the 4A state girls soccer playoffs.

Courant veteran recalls days on the beat
