  • Mitchell faces tough task at...

DENVER — At the beginning of the 2011-12 wrestling season, Clear Creek head coach Stan Gould thought that Tyson Mitchell had a chance of qualifying for the 3A state wrestling championships. After all, he got there as a freshman. He also won state and national titles as a 12-year-old.
But as the season wore on there were concern he wouldn’t get there.

  • Michener’s stay short, but...

DENVER — The fact wasn’t lost on Walter Michener. All the Clear Creek sophomore had to do was look up into the stands at the Pepsi Center on Feb. 16 and see the crowd. It was an intimidating site.
“I’ve never seen so many people in my life,” Michener said. “... It’s my second year of wrestling. All of my friends have been wrestling a lot longer than me. Most of them weren’t able to go to state this year. I had the privilege of coming.”

  • Flat start doesn’t slow up...

Spot the opposition 10 points right off the top. No problem. Not for the Clear Creek Golddiggers. Not this year at least.
That’s exactly what top-seeded Clear Creek did in the quarterfinals of the 3A Frontier League tournament on Feb. 18 against Bruce Randolph at CCHS. The Golddiggers only came back to score 32 of the next 39 points to lead by 15 at halftime en route to a 73-39 victory.

  • Diggers’ Knaeble wins Ski Meister

It’s taken four long years, but for Clear Creek senior Kyle Knaeble it was worth the wait.
Knaeble was awarded the Ski Meister award Feb. 17 after a grueling two days of state competition at Beaver Creek Ski Resort. In order to be named Ski Meister, athletes must compete in, and show mastery of, all four disciplines of competitive skiing — classic, giant slalom, skate and slalom during the regular season.
He is the first Ski Meister from Clear Creek since Amber Moran won the girls title in 2005 and the first boys winner since Ryan Cadenhead won in 2001.

  • Golddiggers capture first league...

The Clear Creek Golddiggers, behind 17 points each from Kellen Cosby and Xander Andrade, toppled Jefferson 70-34 at CCHS on Feb. 14 to capture the 3A Frontier League regular-season championship.
It's the first league title since 1961 for Clear Creek (15-4, 10-1 3A Frontier League), which won a division championship in 1987 but lost in the divisional crossover game to decide league supremacy.

  • Washington, Diggers rout host...

DENVER — Haleigh Washington scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as Clear Creek routed Bruce Randolph 52-20 on Feb. 11.
The game was a makeup from Jan. 11.
Washington made 13 of 17 shots. The game was never in doubt after Clear Creek (14-4, 7-3 3A Frontier) went on an 18-2 run in the second quarter to lead by 19 points at halftime.
Ally Huff added nine points, Anna Schwecke seven and Paula Fernandez six as the Lady Golddiggers won for the third time in four games and for the sixth time in eight.

  • Diggers’ size adds up to...

WESTMINSTER — Clear Creek used its size, behind big men Kellen Cosby and Justin Lucas, to its advantage to rally from a 14-point halftime deficit to upend The Academy 74-69 on Feb. 11.
Cosby had 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Lucas added 20 points and 15 boards as the Golddiggers (14-4, 9-1 3A Frontier League) won their third straight and ninth game out of 10.
Clear Creek outscored the host Wildcats 52-33 over the final 16 minutes. Xander and Sebby Andrade added 11 points each.

  • Rising above the rest

Kyle Knaeble has been skiing for much of his life. Don’t believe it then consider that the Minnesota native was a mere 22 months old with a pacifier in his mouth when he started.

  • Potter, Riley carry load for...

Anthony Potter didn’t take first place at 145 pounds during the 3A Frontier League wrestling championships hosted by Clear Creek High School on Feb. 4. But that didn’t diminish his efforts or erase the sheer satisfaction he enjoyed after placing third.

  • Diggers control Frontier chase

SHERIDAN — If Clear Creek boys basketball coach David Schuessler had to pick one player — any player — on his roster to be at the foul line with 6.1 seconds left and his team clinging to a one-point lead it would be Sebby Andrade.
It didn’t matter that Andrade had all of two points before that moment came to fruition on Feb. 4 at Sheridan. He would’ve been the choice.
