Craig Stephen McMullin, 52, of Idaho Springs, son of Gene and Jo An McMullin of Prairie City, Iowa, was killed in a motorcycle accident at St. George, Utah, at 1:50 p.m. on Aug. 6, 2009, on his way home following a trip to California where he spent time with his son Matthew, daughter Megan and her fiance Ben Willet.
He spent time with his parents, who were vacationing in the Lake Tahoe area, and visited his brother Eric and wife Alice, brother Kurt and wife Nobuko and their four children.
Craig was a graduate of Prairie City High School and Iowa State University. He received a master of business administration degree from the University of Denver and was employed as executive director of the North America Association of Free Community Papers with an office in Denver.
Craig’s career in the newspaper business included the Des Moines Register, The Denver Post, Ames Tribune, and the owner and publisher of Clear Creek Courant of Idaho Springs.
He married Marilyn Brandhof in August of 1975, who is also a graduate of Prairie City High School.
In addition to those previously mentioned, left to mourn are a brother Mark and special friend Gail DeGeorge, and brother Brad and wife Kameri and their two children. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Frank and Hazel (Olson) Lark of Ogden, Iowa, and Paul and Marie (Baker) McMullin of Granger, Iowa.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Foothills Chapel in Golden. Tentative plans are being made for a celebration of life to be held at Prairie City, Iowa, on the anniversary of his death.
Craig had spent 1 1/2 years creating and establishing a non-profit foundation in support of literacy for children. This foundation, Our Kids Can Read, was granted 501(c)3 status by the IRS this spring and was commended by the IRS for its initiative.
