At least one person has died and two others are in critical condition after a vehicle collision that closed U.S. Highway 40 between Empire and Winter Park Sunday afternoon for about 4 hours.

The roadway was announced reopened by CDOT by 4:21 p.m. Dec. 10.

According to CSP Corporal Ivan Alvarado, the crash is on the Clear Creek side of Berthoud Pass, near mile marker 249. Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision around 12:45 p.m. One person was confirmed dead at the scene, and at least two others were transported to a Denver area hospital, he said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and Alvarado said he expects more information will be available soon.
